Case Study of an Implementation and Rollout of a High‐Density High‐Impact Network

This chapter provides an up‐to‐date case study of the implementation and rollout of a high‐density, high‐impact network that embodies many of the concepts, approaches, and technologies. In a legacy airport environment, there are a relatively high number of independent networks numbering into the thousands, servicing passengers, concessions, airlines, and maintenance functions. The chapter addresses the following: the current environment and problems with the existing wireless network at the Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport; the Request For Proposal Requirements for a new network at the BWI Airport; and the newly deployed #MyBWI‐FI communications infrastructure. The administration owns and operates the BWI Airport, which is comprised of approximately 3600 acres of property. Carrier‐neutral cellular service coverage will be expanded across the entire airport footprint, from the existing public areas to the rental car facility, firehouse, and parking garages.
