The Changing Face of Mobile Communications

This chapter first analyses the profound changes to the operational and business models caused by the adaptations of centralisation and virtualisation of the key components in the mobile network. It then investigates some of the vertical industries emerging as potential benefactors from the 5G capabilities of eMBB, ultra‐reliability and low latency and massive Machine Type Communications. The chapter looks at the technical and business context of the emerging key vertical areas. It also looks briefly into how today's Smartphones will evolve within 5G and beyond. Finally, it considers the ‘crystal ball’ to identify some of the key enabling technologies that may formulate 6G.
