General Mechanism to Optimally Coordinate Directional Overcurrent Relays

This chapter provides the reader the knowledge required to optimally coordinate directional overcurrent relay (DOCRs). It can be considered as the first step to understand the main concept of overcurrent relays (ORC) problems and how to model them mathematically. The chapter focuses on how to formulate the coordination problem of DOCRs into a mathematical model so that it can be solved later by any available n‐dimensional optimization technique. The basic idea behind inspection method is to trace the current direction that DOCR can see, and try to find the other DOCRs in other zones that can see the same current direction. The important thing is to say that if anyone wants to solve the ORC problem of DOCRs, the hand calculation of fault analysis is highly not recommended. For designing adaptive ORC solvers, it could be viable to rely on MATLAB because the former one is free and much familiar in the industry field.
