Introduction to Permanent Magnet AC Machine Design

This chapter aims to introduce the design of permanent magnet ac (PMAC) machine. It briefly reviews operating characteristics of PMAC. One of the most important of these characteristics is that this class of machinery requires a power electronics device known as an inverter to operate. As part of the design process, select materials for the stator steel, the rotor steel, the conductor, and the permanent magnet should be selected. The chapter considers a machine connected to a current‐regulated inverter and that, through the action of the inverter controls, the machine currents are regulated to be equal to the commanded q‐ and d‐axis currents. It presents a magnetic analysis of the machine and utilizes an analytical field solution. The chapter aims to set forth a procedure to calculate the parameters of the lumped parameter model of the machine. The problem of determining the flux density waveforms in the ferromagnetic portions of the machine is considered.
