1 INTRODUCTION

Biological systems sense and respond to their surroundings. When you exercise, you get stronger. When you cut your skin, you heal. The built environment and the machines that surround us, however, do not have such abilities. Why not? The answer is quite simple: they are not built out of the living biological materials that form our bodies and our natural organic environment.
