CHAPTER 06 Implantable and Wearable Microelectronic Devices for Rebuilding the Lives of Disabled People

In recent years, an enormous surge of works is being carried out on developing new technologies for microelectronics and sensing devices of various kinds of applications in the peripheral and central nervous systems. The miniaturised and implantable neural interfacing devices are widely applied in different clinical scenarios for example, peripheral, and spinal nerve interfaces for monitoring epilepsy, cochlear and retinal implants, and as deep brain stimulators thanks to evolutions in microelectronics, sensors, communications, and neuroscience. Implementation of such neuranics (neural electronics) using traditional CMOS technology is inefficient in terms of size, performance and power. Such inefficiencies have driven a significant effort to investigate the development of beyond-CMOS devices.
