Fog and Edge Driven Security & Privacy Issues in IoT Devices

With exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the amount of data produced has also increased explosively. Traditional cloud computing has come to bottleneck due to its limitations in bandwidth, resources, latency and time sensitive data which is generated within milliseconds. Therefore, upcoming technologies such as fog and edge computing techniques are required to handle the data efficiently. The fog computing paradigm improves storage and computing and network facilities of cloud computing that reduce the delay or service latency to end users. It has the capacity to process a high number of nodes and supports geographical distribution. Edge computing also provides features such as content perception, parallel processing and real time computing. Hence increasing the network performance and reducing latency. However, all the new techniques have their own security and privacy issues and challenges that need to be studied. Similarly, edge computing also has some additional features due to which it requires special attention. This chapter is categorized into two sections: the first section is focused on fog computing and the second section deals with edge computing. We will first introduce the basics of fog and edge computing, its architecture, working, advantages and use cases, and then majorly focuses on their security and privacy issues separately. In the end offered solutions and research opportunities in both fields are discussed.
