Human Interface Considerations for Situational Awareness

Technology has lowered the barrier for the collection of vast amounts of data by persons, organizations, companies, and governments. The real‐time relevance of the big data we acquire hinges on how well systems are designed to collect, filter, aggregate, correlate, fuse, analyze, and distribute information of relevance in a timely manner to decision makers, whether they be first responders in the field or resource managers at a headquarters. This chapter illustrates the importance of human systems integration in a situational awareness context and explores the impact that artificial intelligence, big data, and mobile applications have on the collectors and consumers of information.
