Digital Communities and EU–US ICT Development Collaboration

This chapter focuses on the impact and potential of “digital” in digital communities in the European Union and the United States and how that affects information and communication technology development collaboration related to 5th Generation networks, Big Data, and Internet of Things/cyber‐physical systems. It provides an overview of the most pressing and/or challenging policy issues that confront technological, business, and policy collaborations and develops valid and practical insights into how they can be addressed from a transatlantic multi‐stakeholder perspective operating in a global context. The implementation of standards in industry and commerce grew in importance with the onset of the industrial revolution and its requirements for high‐precision machine tools. Digital Communities will continue to evolve, via the progressive digitization of existing communities, the intentional creation of explicitly digital communities, and the emergence of new communities from the development, deployment, and use of digital services.
