Higher Generation of Mobile Communications and Public Safety

This chapter analyzes the evolution of the public safety system providing an analysis of the existing public safety network, 4G long term evolution (LTE) and its application in public security, its comparison to the 5G network technology, the link between the two, and the spectrum of public safety. Within the EU, the two technologies used in public safety are TETRAPOL and terrestrial trunked radio. 4G LTE does form a good enough basis for public safety implementation. In 5G, the costs depend on different factors in the public safety system including the density, base station prices, and the periodic interest rates. The 3GPP has a long history of coming up with and defining the different technologies that are used within public safety communication. This evolution includes from the global system for mobile communication to high‐speed packet access , 4G LTE and finally to the upcoming 5G technology.
