Introduction to the Simulation of Electromagnetic Transients Using ATP

This chapter introduces the input data formats used in Alternative Transients Program (ATP) and discusses some important issues to be accounted for when editing input data files and analyse simulation results. It presents a detailed analysis of both the series and parallel RLC circuits; the study of many practical transients in power systems can be reduced to any of these two simple configurations, and they provide an excellent background to introduce the application of a simulation package like the ATP. The chapter analyses transients caused when switching currents predominately capacitive and/or inductive; for this second type, reactances can either be linear or nonlinear. It provides an introduction to transients in power systems with components represented by means of distributed‐parameter models considering very simple modelling approaches. The chapter presents the study of electromagnetic transients in linear systems and continues with the study of systems whose models also include nonlinear components.
