36 QUIET SCIENCE AND NUCLEAR THREATS

The Iraqi security forces had guns; my United Nations (UN) inspection team wasn't allowed cameras or secure radios, let alone weapons. But in June 1991, when we stumbled upon 100 trucks' worth of contraband nuclear weapons equipment, the only weapon we needed were radios broadcasting in the clear. While the Iraqi guards shot at us, we called for help over wavelengths we knew would be picked up by local media and then spread internationally.
