SMART GRID SIMULATIONS AND CONTROL

This chapter covers the state‐of‐the‐art of power system simulation and controls, which has evolved since the 1960s by utilizing the rapidly increasing power of digital computation. It provides a comprehensive list of applications that power engineers need to simulate for everyday operations of the grid. Several cyber‐physical system smart‐grid simulation testbeds have been developed to facilitate hardware‐in‐loop simulation of different grid applications including grid controls without the need for gaining access to real data. One of the desired properties of simulation models is structural dynamicity. There are several software packages for power system simulations that are used in industry and academia. The chapter reviews different approaches for designing new control systems that will become imperative as more renewables and power electronics get integrated into today's grid. It also provides a list the challenges that stand in the way of the advanced modeling methods.
