Unified Design of Wireless Information and Power Transmission

This chapter reveals that the efficiency in fact varies with both the radio frequency (RF) input power at the rectifier and the specific RF signal waveform being used for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), which has motivated to implement dual mode SWIPT. It proposes a new transceiver architecture for SWIPT with adaptive mode switching (MS) between single and multi‐tone waveforms via an adaptive power management and information decoding (PM‐ID) module to control the operational range for energy neutral operation. The chapter presents nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) models along with the measured RF‐to‐direct current power conversion efficiency (PCE), which provides useful insights for designing dual mode SWIPT. It proposes a waveform and transceiver design for multi‐tone (PAPR) based SWIPT with higher WPT efficiency and dual mode SWIPT for an increased operational range. The chapter also proposes the reconfigurable energy harvester for enlarging the linear region of the PCE over wide input power ranges.
