In the Coen brothers' 1998 movie The Big Lebowski, Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski bemoans the ruination—by urination, no less, and by confused nihilists to boot—of his favorite rug because “it really tied the room together.”

Our possessions tie us to our past and to each other, and so we often value them more for what they say (or allow us to say) about other things than for what they represent in themselves. The Dude's rug serves a similar role in the film as a whole and is, at one point, used by the Coens as a visual metaphor for the city of Los Angeles.
