Automated Design and Optimization of ΣΔMs

This chapter deals with some of the relevant design methods and computer‐aided design (CAD) tools intended for the automated high‐level synthesis and optimization of ΣΔMs. It considers how they can be combined to help designers find the best ΣΔM design for a given set of requirements. The chapter focuses on the problem of architecture selection and how it can be addressed and assisted using the well‐known Schreier's Delta‐Sigma toolbox. It describes how to combine behavioral simulation and optimization to automate the high‐level sizing procedure, considering different optimization engines and SIMulink‐based SIgma‐DElta Simulator (SIMSIDES) as performance evaluator. The chapter explores how to apply multi‐objective evolutionary algorithms to automate the high‐level design of ΣΔMs. More generally, the optimization process of any circuit or system can be formulated as a multi‐objective optimization problem (MOOP). The chapter illustrates how the multi‐objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEA) optimization is coupled to SIMSIDES.
