Stratification and Normalization

In previous chapters we discussed the recognition of patterns—classes of figures closed under the transformations of some group. We now turn to the related question of recognizing the equivalence, under a group, of an arbitrary pair of figures. The results below were surprising to us, for we had supposed that such problems were not generally of finite order.
