The Role of Fog Computing in the Future of the Automobile

This chapter focuses on challenges in a key technological area of the car ‐ the electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture, and discusses the role of fog computing in addressing these challenges. It describes the current automobile electronic architecture and discusses the challenges of such electronic architecture as it faces near future requirements. It also describes more specifically how the convergence of information technologies (IT) and how operational technologies (OT) is manifesting in the automotive space and will drive the future automotive architecture. The chapter introduces key technologies that will be fundamental in the car electronics evolution and motivates the vision for a scalable, more centralized computing architecture for the car of the future. It also motivates the roles of deterministic networking and virtualization in the future car control architecture. The chapter concludes that fog computing, in its most complete interpretation, provides an ideal infrastructure architecture responding to the fundamental challenges facing automotive electronic design.
