Developments and Practical Field Trials of TV White Space Technologies

This chapter introduces results of research and development on the TV white space (TVWS) conducted by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan. The first part of the chapter describes two kind of devices; IEEE 802.11af and LTE, and two kinds of management systems; TVWS database (DB) and IEEE 802.19.1. In TVWS systems, the databases protect primary users by providing the calculated operational parameters to white space devices in order to prevent interferences to the primary users. The current database system can provide operational parameters to several requests per second due to the sophisticated specifications and the high‐accuracy requirements. The chapter also describes two cases of field experiments and propagation measurements in Japan and U.K. Ofcom white space pilot.
