Summary and Outlook

This chapter describes various standards and specifications available for wireless sensor networks. This is important especially if one plan to apply sensor networks in industrial environments where similar solutions already exist to some extent. WirelessHART and ISA100 share the same physical and MAC specifications (IEEE802.15.4) as Zigbee, but implement their own data dissemination protocols for different applications. It was developed by Dynastream Innovations and enables a multicast wireless sensor network for sport and health gadgets. It offers a higher transmission rate than Zigbee and has been widely used by producers such as Garmin, Adidas, and Nike for their sport tracking devices. RFID is an important technology as well, with DASH7 being one of the most‐used standards for RFID‐enabled sensor networks. Two of the best conferences for sensor networks are the ACM Conference on Embedded Sensing Systems (SenSys) and the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN).
