In Practice: Channel Modeling for Modern Communication Systems

This chapter describes the development of channel models for various communication scenarios, conventional cellular scenarios, newly emerging vehicle‐to‐vehicle (V2V) scenarios, and cooperative scenarios, using different modeling approaches. As newly emerging communication systems, the typical scenarios for V2V and cooperative communications are very different to those for conventional cellular systems, resulting in these newly emerging communication systems having unique channel characteristics. The chapter introduces and classifies typical scenarios for V2V and cooperative communication systems, as well as presents the important channel characteristics of V2V and cooperative communication systems. It concentrates on two important statistics: amplitude distribution and Doppler power spectral density (PSD). The chapter proposes an efficient deterministic sum‐of‐sinusoids (SoS) simulation model for wideband multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels, based on the proposed wideband MIMO channel reference model. Finally, it focuses on the development of more real scattering theoretical channel models for MIMO V2V channels in non‐isotropic scattering environments.
