Turbo Coding: Applications

Coding gains have always been limited by the technology available for implementation. Turbo codes introduced a paradigm shift in the error control coding discipline, which fundamentally changed the way it will be thought of and practiced. This chapter enlists various applications of turbo coding such as 3G wireless standards, digital video broadcast, space data system, and high-order modulations. When it comes to applying turbo codes, the low error floor often caused by random interleaving is a problem, and much of the design of the codes goes into designing the interleavers, especially since there is a limited choice of component codes that are practical. In an effort to construct deterministic interleavers, which have the statistical properties of random interleavers, quadratic interleavers are designed. Quadratic interleavers are defined by a quadratic indexing function.
