Residential Network Architectures and Services

Cable companies worldwide has provided residential services over coaxial cable using the Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) protocol that is a set of telecommunications standards that permit the addition of high-speed data transfer to an existing cable TV (CATV) system. Multiple system operators (MSOs) provide both residential and commercial services over IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) platform. This chapter describes MSO residential network architectures and services for the technologies. It explains an MSO's goals for deploying a content distribution networks (CDN) for video distribution over IP, the architecture of a CDN, services supplied by a CDN and areas for future CDN research. It also describes the use of CDNs to distribute video assets, but the reader can infer the delivery of any type of file in the following CDN discussions.
