Review of AC Analysis and Network Simulation

This chapter along with Appendix B (Complex Math) is useful as a review for the electrical engineer (or as an introduction for the out of department student) to alternating current (AC) network analysis. It begins with the voltage-current relations for resistor, inductor and capacitor (RLC) elements that are used to form lumped, linear, finite, passive, bilateral (LLFPB) networks. Handling their differential and integral relationships using the concept of complex impedance is demonstrated. Methods for estimating reactances and combining impedances are given. Multiplication using logarithms is reviewed and its extension to decibel, dBm and dBW measures. Conditions for maximum power transfer are derived. Insertion loss is introduced and related to series and shunt elements on a transmission line. Practical RLC elements are described with high frequency equivalent circuits, methods of construction and skin effect. Simulation of linear networks using a typical network simulator (Genesys software is used) is introduced and demonstrated, including a circuit optimization execution.
