Specifications and standards scene [HV switchgear]

The UK Regional Electricity Companies (REC) requirements for internal arcing tests for high voltage switchgear up to 36 kV are based on IEC298, complemented by EA Technical Specifications (EATS) 41-26 and 41-27. The selection of options from IEC 298, and the specific test arrangements to be used, were introduced in 1991 with the issue of the EATSs. This was against a background of opinion from the electricity industry that internal arcing tests were required and that these would enhance safety in the event of an internal fault. In IEC298 the tests are optional and by agreement.
