We present techniques based on cubic spline approximations for estimating coefficients (e.g., diffusion, convector velocity, etc.) depending on time and the spatial variable in parabolic distributed systems such as those that arise in transport models. Convergence results and a summary of numerical performance of the resulting algorithms are given.
