Trusted Internet of Things-Enabled Intelligent System for Future Smart City: Architecture and Challenges

Smart city manifests an ecosystem that seamlessly integrates information technology and urban modernization. Urban intelligent system serves as an important anchor point for the development of city intelligence and informatization, in which trust is one of the central issues. Trust characterizes reliable identity management, data security, and service quality improvement, which dictates the cooperation among participants and influences the service effectiveness. However, trust construction in existing intelligent systems faces a number of barriers and bottlenecks from the perspectives of cross-layer and cross-domain data integration, information sharing and business collaboration. In this work, we present a hierarchical architecture and define the requirements in urban intelligent systems. We formally describe the concept of trust and its salient features in smart city. We design a feasible layered framework and highlight the key enabling technologies in a trusted IoT-enabled intelligent system. Finally, we identify several open challenges for further explorations.
