Renewable Energy Sources Contribution to Short Circuit Current

Integrating renewable energy sources into the grid has many advantages, including reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based generators and decreasing CO
2
emissions produced by conventional generators. With the increase of renewable energy sources penetration at the distribution level, the power flow changes from radial to non-radial. Additionally, integrating renewable energy sources into power systems impacts power flow and short circuit results. The contribution of renewable energy sources to short circuit values in the buses varies depending on pre-fault voltage at the connected bus, equivalent seen impedance at the fault location, and renewable energy sources type. Wind turbine type 1, which operates as an induction generator, has the highest short circuit contribution. In contrast, solar PV has the lowest contribution to short circuit as solar PV is decoupled from the network. IEEE 9 bus is used to illustrate renewable energy source contribution to short circuit, and both ETAP software were utilized for simulation and verification. The main contribution of this paper is to consider different types of renewable energy sources, integrate them into the network, and compare their impact on short circuit values.
