Spatial Distribution of Soil Condition and Bearing Capacity for Pile Foundation Design in Palembang

The rapid development of infrastructure in Indonesia, such as the city of Palembang, has led to the need for mapping the important information of the area. Mapping of various facilities is available through the city’s website. However, the map of subsurface conditions in Palembang is currently not available. This paper presents the results of a study on soil type and soil’s bearing capacity for the pile foundation design in Palembang. The study used data obtained using a mechanical cone penetration test (CPT) from 77 selected locations across the city. ArcGIS 10.3 application was utilized for Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping. The CPT data was combined with the Digital Map of Indonesia (RBI) from the Geospatial Information Agency. Layers of administration, transportation, drainage, and contour maps were used as the input. The output is presented in terms of a ground surface level, the groundwater level, the elevation of the hard soil layer (based on conus resistance of 25 MPa), the soil’s type, and the required pile length (of size $400 \times 400$ mm and fc’ = 25 MPa) with pile bearing capacity of 300 kN.
