Optimization of Corona Rings Parameters for 765kV and 500kV Polymer Insulators

In recent years, polymeric insulators have played an essential role in the power transmission system. To control the electric field strength and voltage distribution along the surface of the insulators. In this research, corona rings were used at the ends of the 765 kV and 500 kV polymeric insulators depending on the two-dimensional (2D) finite element method(FEM) and optimizing the position and dimensions of the corona rings using the Nelder Mead algorithm. The optimization problem is achieved by decreasing the electric field strength by obtaining the parameter values for optimal corona loops. According to the numerical results, the Nelder Mead technique reduced the field strength by 69% for the 765 kV insulator compared to the field strength at the original values of the corona rings and 32% of the field strength for the 500 kV insulator. This methodology is characterized by high-performance speed and can be applied to different levels of voltages.
