A scanning conversion system to realize unified field of image-display

For a progressive scanning image source, a new scanning conversion system has been studied to attain a high picture-quality with higher vertical and horizontal resolution just as a high-definition image source. It has already been clarified by Kataoka et al. (1996) and by Furuhata et al. (1997) that in a cathode-ray tube (CRT) display the traditional progressive scanning system which employs a high-density scanning method with a narrow scanning-line interval has to bring a degradation of the vertical response because of the physical characteristics of the display. It has also been confirmed in the papers that a new 1000-scanning-line conversion system with a wobbling scanning method enables one to obtain a higher vertical response than that of the high-density progressive scanning system especially under a large-area display with higher brightness and contrast. By applying a similar concept, in this paper, a new image enhancement system has been introduced to increase a number of pixels of the progressive scanning image source fourfold. It has also been mentioned that the system leads to a single-scanning display system having compatibility and harmonization with new-generation display systems for multimedia image sources such as a conventional TV image source with 525/30 (480i) interlaced scanning, a personal computer image source with 525/60 (480p) progressive scanning and a high-definition image source with 1125/30 (1080i) interlaced scanning. From this view point, the new concept of the scanning technology has been proposed to realize an unified field of image-display for the next generation digital-multimedia TV systems.
