The value of network resolution – A validation study of the European energy system model PyPSA-Eur

This article presents a validation study for the open European energy system model PyPSA-Eur. We investigate the impact of different grid constraints in PyPSA-Eur on the optimized power generation mix and import and export flows between countries. Additionally, we assess the deviation of the modeled values from the historical generation mix and cross-border flows. Our aim is to reproduce historically measured electricity generation and flow patterns in Europe for 2018. The simulation includes a spatially and temporally detailed representation of renewable generation (wind, solar and hydro) and conventional generation as well as cross-border flows. Simulated and historical values of both the generation mix and the cross-border flows show an acceptable conformity. The model is able to capture the main power system characteristics for Germany and neighboring countries, such as conventional power generation patterns, wind and solar production as well as seasonal variation on cross-border flows.
