Comparison of Responses of Ion-Channel and Simplified Pacemaker Cell Models on External Stimulation

For cardiac electrical modeling and validation of various systems for personalized medicine, such as implantable devices, computationally efficient simplified models are preferable. It is important that the behavior of these models should be as close as possible to ion-channel models based on experimental data. The aim of this work is the selection of reference ion-channel cell models for tuning of simplified models. For this purpose, we performed basic bifurcation analysis of complex ion-channel and simplified cardiac pacemaker models available in the CellML Model Repository applying external stimulation current, and compared the variation of cycle lengths and action potential properties. The observed bifurcation behavior demonstrated pronounced differences among the models considered.
