Hand Grip Strength Estimation for Sarcopenia Diagnosis by Finger Tracking

Human hand grip strength can be measured objectively with hand grip dynamometers and the data is used in various fields. Typically, it is used for public service exams and the diagnosis of sarcopenia that has been recently recognized as a disease and has been given a ‘disease code’. The hand grip dynamometers are expensive, and because it is difficult for individuals to measure and use hand grips, we propose a new method to measure hand grip strength by obtaining joint angles of fingers from finger tracking. With rubber balls and webcams, we can easily measure grip strength for sarcopenia diagnosis. Using camera-based hand grip strength estimation, we can develop a mobile device-based sarcopenia diagnosis.
