Material Testing and Optimum Thickness Calculation for Automotive Millimeter Wave Radar Radome

In the field of automotive active safety, automotive millimeter wave radar sensor is one of the core components, of which 77 GHz millimeter wave radar is an essential key component on smart cars, a sensor device that can quickly sense the distance, speed, azimuth and other information of the surrounding environment objects in the range of 0-200 meters in all-weather scenarios. In China, with the massive and rapid installation of millimeter wave radar in 77 GHz band, it makes the material design of radar radome also become exceptionally tricky. Whenever a new model is launched, the bumper design change may bring about the redesign and verification of the radome, and the dielectric properties of the material will greatly affect the radar performance. Therefore, this paper discusses how to decide the optimal thickness of radome material to solve and verify the material design problem for automotive millimeter wave radar manufacturers by actually measuring the dielectric constant of automotive millimeter wave radome material, and theoretical calculation of transmission reflection characteristic in dielectric material. And it is verified that the results obtained using the method demonstrated in this paper are very close to the values obtained using the conventional quasi-optical method.
