Amplitude modulation in the sigma band of sleep EEG in elderly subjects

Three parameters related to sigma band amplitude modulation are studied under physiological conditions, i.e. sleep in elderly subjects, which causes problems in conventional EEG analysis. A quantitative method for EEG analysis that can be used for sleep in both young and elderly subjects is presented. Experimental results obtained from six elderly and six young subjects are analyzed. For five of the elderly patients, two of the parameters had a statistically significant shift from REM to non-REM sleep. The mean REM values of all three parameters exhibited a high degree of intersubject stability. No statistically significant differences between young and old subjects were found.<
