Statistical Analysis of Mode-Division Multiplexing Gains in Coherent Free-Space Optical Communications

We confirm the potential of receiver-side modal diversity for the mitigation of impairments induced by atmospheric turbulence in free-space optical communications. On this basis, we propose a scheme to combine this approach to turbulence mitigation with mode-division multiplexing.
