In reply to Major R. T. McArthur: It is a fact that for public utility systems, the economic factor as well as the results obtained, do not warrant this system as practicable. But I believe with the balanced modulator, or suppressed carrier system, operation over distances smaller than 800 miles is both practicable and satisfactory. The smaller costs of terminal equipment and physical repeaters bring the initial outlay within favourable limits. The removal of one of the sidebands entirely is a further aid to quality reproduction, as well as a saving in frequency range and sending power.
