Some notes ok the manufacture of porcelain insulators

Mr. President, gentlemen: It is more than probable that transmission engineers look upon porcelain insulators as an invention of the devil especially designed on scientific lines to lead them into temptation. With or without diabolical influence, however, some most disheartening interruptions of service have been occasioned in the past due to the inexplicable failure of line insulators which have been built up with what was undoubtedly an ample factor of safety. So serious did this insulation problem become about fifteen years ago that manufacturers throughout the world were compelled to undertake an intensive study of the behaviour of high voltage porcelain insulators.
