Illumination and some of its fundamental considerations

To some, the subject with which this paper treats may, at first thought, appear to be simple, and compared with other branches of engineering, relatively insignificant. When, however, we stop to consider and analyse the important part that artificial lighting plays in almost every sphere of endeavour, it becomes apparent that it is a subject of the utmost importance. Our home comforts, pleasures, industrial activities, safety along the streets after dark, and in travel, are all influenced to the greatest degree by artificial illumination.
