Printed Antenna With Pattern Reconfiguration in Both E- and H-Planes

In this paper, a printed antenna with pattern reconfiguration in both E-plane and H-plane is presented. It consists of five elements which include 4 parasitic elements forming a square shape centered at the driving element. Pattern reconfiguration is achieved by employing the operational principles of Yagi-Uda antenna, in which the positions of the director and reflector are interchanged using electronic switches. The proposed antenna employing eight integrated PIN diodes is designed to radiate in both H-plane (-30°, 0° and 30°) and E-plane (0° and 28°). The antenna resonates at 3.65 GHz with impedance bandwidth and gain of about 7% and 7 dB, respectively, in all switching modes, making the proposed antenna suitable for WiMAX applications.
