Quantization Requirements for FM Gyroscopes An Update on the Nonlinear FM Gyroscope

Frequency modulated (FM) gyroscopes are capable of either excellent long-term or short-term stability depending on a variety of factors. An often overlooked aspect is the design of the frequency demodulator. Motivated by odd experimental results with the nonlinear FM gyroscope, this work studies the quantization requirements of the frequency demodulator. Results are used to implement an improved detector for FM gyroscopes. Short-term stability can be limited by the frequency detector, however, long-term stability is dependent on several factors. A calibration method that utilizes quadrature error to mitigate long-term drift is proposed, but further improvement may be possible with active frequency split control.
