Predicting the Reliability of Physical Channel in Optical Access Networks by Non-destructive Methods

This paper deals with the problem of improving the reliability of fiber optic communication lines. A timely diagnostics of potentially hazardous optical fiber segments allows to restore the “trouble” sections before a breakdown of the optical cable. The method proposed for location of stressed sections and sections under tension based on Mandelshtam – Brillouin scattering analysis is discussed. Adding the Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometer to the control system for diagnostics of the optical fibers state makes it possible to identify locations of optical cable with increased mechanical stress and temperature changes, which increases the efficiency of monitoring systems. The conclusion about increased efficiency of the method is confirmed by appropriate measurements. Measurement of the tension value in the optical fiber of the cable will make it possible to predict the operating time before failure and timely identify areas of risk Advantages of the method are shown by comparison with commonly used techniques.
