Optimal design of Orthopyramid-like origami cores for load damping

Core panels inspired by origami have advantages of force allocation and energy dissipation. Used as a sandwich core, the three-dimensional panels could be created by various origami patterns. Orthopyramid is an origami pattern that has a tip joined together of side triangles. Through the shape deformation, it could exhibit potential mechanical performance. This study focuses on nine different Orthopyramid-like origami configurations though changing the evolution coefficient value and the number of edges. The numerical simulation of the compression and impact events are carried out using ANSYS finite element package. In addition, the results have been discussed to evaluate the effect of the number of edges and the evolution coefficient. Moreover, the study includes a method of optimizing the structure parameter via genetic algorithm.
