Measurement and Observation of Cross-Provider Cross-Region Latency for Cloud-Based IoT Systems

To build a high-resilient and low-latency IoT system, it is a must to utilize various cloud computing resources available in different service regions owned by different providers, and obtaining latency information is the key for the success. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a lightweight latency measurement service that can collect latency data across cloud service regions and providers. Preliminary data has been collected from six U.S. regions owned by AWS and Azure, and useful insights from the data are also reported in this paper.
