Wind farms use DFIG with a passive method of protection against grid faults

Due to the increasing use of variable speed wind turbines in electrical grids during recent years, the requirements to maintain the stability of these generators have taken on great importance. The same goes for maintain their connection to the grid in the event of a low voltage ride through (LVRT) or fault. In this article, we present a number of methods that aim to improve the stability of DFIG in the event of a network voltage drop, including stator damping resistance (SDR) and DC-CHOPPER, parallel limiter of the DC-LINK, with an optimal choice of its components, and then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method using the simulation results. The simulations were performed in MATLAB/Simulink software environment.
