Automated system for measurement of natural lighting and utilization of the results for lighting control

In the recent years the idea of human centric lighting is gaining popularity. This idea is based on the non-visual effect that light have on people, which can adjust their daily rhythms and improve their motivation, well-being and productivity. The simplest way of achieving human centric lighting is by maximum use of the natural daylight. Except for the positive influence of the daylight on people it has another advantage - it naturally leads to energy efficiency of lighting systems, because it leads to reduced demand for lighting from artificial sources. In order to estimate the gain of illuminance by natural lighting on the work plane, it should be measured or simulated. The current paper presents an automatic lighting measurement system, which is programmed to measure both horizontal and vertical illuminances on the working plane of premises. The results received from the system are analyzed and used for development of a lighting control strategy.
