Best-effort algorithm for predicting cloud motion impact on solar PV power systems production

The shades caused by clouds passing in front of the sun, once on a photovoltaic panel, its expected energy output drastically drops due to the rapid solar irradiance variation on the PV cells. This represents a challenge for grid operators when those intermittent systems are connected massively to the electrical grid, more than ever, to distribution networks. In this paper, we put forward a method to foresee the impact of cloud movement on PV modules by using existing satellite images, already intended for different uses. This method will permit us to predict the PV power production considering clouds shading for short-time intervals, likewise, handle correctly the power system protection devices. As a solution, it may have a huge benefit on distribution network operators as it will enable them enhance the monitoring of the PV systems connected to their grids by underpinning their prediction results. Finally, economize the use of ground based equipments for sky images capture at each station.
