Optimization of street lighting design following the Brazilian standard using PSO

This paper presents the development of a script that uses the particle swarm optimization (PSO) in order to maximize the energy efficiency of a street lighting system. The proposed script is based on Brazilian standard NBR 5101-2012. The script validation is carried out with Dialux, a commercial software widely employed in street lighting projects. The implementation of PSO method is based on a lighting mathematical procedure. The calibration of some parameters of the method is also performed. The obtained results show that the proposed script was able to maximize the energy efficiency in agreement with the standard requirements. Additionally, an inverse relationship between uniformity and energy efficiency was observed.
