Vision system aided 3D object reconstruction and machining using CNC milling machine

This work presents an approach for automatic 3D object reconstruction using its shadow. The objective of this work is to apply machine vision technology to develop a non-contact and rapid measurement system capable of measuring and reconstruct 3D objects with an appropriate accuracy and to facilitating the possibility of reconstruction of 3D objects by processing 2D images and to convert the extracted parameters into operational data points used to remanufacturing parts by using image features extracted using MATLAB and then process the data points to generate a Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) surface model using Geo-Magic program. Tool path was also generated using Power-Mill program and then generate NC part program (G-code) of the proposed objects, then machining these data points using 3-axis CNC milling machine to obtain three-dimensional object with acceptable shape and accuracy. The developed system is relatively low cost and easy to implement and has been tested on three different objects in shapes and materials. According to the experimental results, the maximum error found in slot component shape in width (0.0903mm) and minimum error found in height attribute that is (0.002mm).
